When did russia’s aggression really begin?

People who don’t know the history are easily susceptible to propaganda. They will believe that russia attacked Ukraine because of “NATO expansion” or the Revolution of Dignity. But these arguments don’t survive a history test.

Remember the “special military operations” before any of that: Transnistria, part of Moldova, in 1992. Abkhazia and South Ossetia, parts of Georgia, in 1991–93. Then Georgia again in 2008. Then Crimea in 2014.

None of it was about “NATO expansion,” whatever paid propagandists and gullible Westerners blabber about. It was about reconstituting the Russian Empire – a project that began practically the day its latest iteration, the Soviet Union, fell. Until russian neo-imperialism and colonialism is soundly defeated, we will be dealing with it every few years.

Anyone who says NATO provoked russia to attack Ukraine is either brainwashed or simply doesn’t know the history.

Look at the numbers. Until 2013, only about 20–30% of Ukrainians (depending on the poll) were in favor of joining NATO. After the annexation of Crimea, that number rose above 50%. Today, after the full-scale invasion, close to 90% of Ukrainians want Ukraine in NATO.

It was russian aggression that pushed Sweden and Finland into NATO. It is russian aggression that keeps prompting countries to join – not NATO expansion forcing russia to attack its neighbors. The causation runs one way, and it isn’t the way the Kremlin claims.

Even Tucker Carlson’s infamous interview with Putin showed that the invasions of 2014 and 2022 had nothing to do with NATO. They had everything to do with Putin’s obsession with the breakup of Kyivan Rus in the 12th century and the USSR in the 20th. He cannot accept that Ukrainians are a nation. That is why he wants to erase Ukraine from existence.

"The usual southern heat is here. Food deliveries still haven't resumed.

At the market there are tomatoes, cucumbers, a few eggplants, some greens. There was watermelon, but people said it cost 2,800 rubles (about $35). And margarine... that's a story of its own.

Someone once said people couldn't possibly have food supplies that last for years. But what if that factory produced 'dairy products' without a single drop of milk? That palm oil substitute has been sitting through years of scorching heat and freezing cold without changing in taste or appearance. Still 'fresh.' Still 'creamy.'

Some of you may think you'd never eat something like that. Believe me — you have no idea what you'd eat when there's nothing else. People even bake cookies with it, if they can find flour.

Staples like grains, potatoes, flour, tea, and coffee are available only through barter. They aren't sold for money.

Sugar costs 1,000 rubles (about $12) per kilogram. A blister pack of Citramon costs the same.

Zucchini has become a strategic food — for people and for animals. Pancakes for yourself, part of the same zucchini for your dog. This vegetable has probably never been in such demand.

Our dogs survive on jars rescued from flooded basements: canned salads, jam, juice, honey. None of it is about eating well. It's about not starving to death.

Who created this man-made experiment? Perhaps only our grandchildren will know.

Because just 4 kilometers away there is food. There is life.

But we have no physical way to leave the city.

Russia attacked civilians in Kyiv and the surrounding region with missiles. 17 people were killed.

Half of them died at the train station. They were just random people riding a train. The Russians showed no mercy and killed them with missiles.

In 1930, the Spanish philosopher José Ortega y Gasset published The Revolt of the Masses, a book that still feels uncomfortably prophetic. His central target was not the poor or the working class, but a new kind of human being he called the “mass man”.

The mass man, Ortega argued, is defined by attitude rather than income. He is the ordinary person who is perfectly satisfied with himself, demands nothing higher of his own character or intellect, and yet insists that his mediocrity be treated as a right. He does not defer to excellence, competence, or higher standards. He regards them with suspicion or resentment. What previous ages saw as the privilege of the few - political influence, cultural authority, the right to shape society - the mass man now claims as his due, without any corresponding effort to rise above the average.

Ortega believed this type of person had been produced by the very success of modern civilisation. Rising living standards, mass education, and liberal institutions had given ordinary people unprecedented power and comfort. But they had not produced a corresponding sense of responsibility or humility before higher achievements. The result was a revolt: the mass man refused to accept the authority of superior knowledge, culture, or character. He demanded that everything be brought down to his level.

The danger, Ortega warned, was that a civilisation cannot survive if its central actors no longer respect the standards that made it possible. When the average begins to dominate without aspiring to anything beyond itself, excellence is undermined, institutions decay, and politics becomes an expression of resentment rather than responsibility.

Ortega’s diagnosis remains unsettling because it is not a complaint about poverty or exclusion. It is a warning about self-satisfied mediocrity armed with power.
