BYD × LINGLING KWONG ( POV ONLY)
"Out of thousands of artists, why did the brand choose her?"
First of all, many people simply know BYD as the world's best-selling electric vehicle manufacturer. But what impresses me even more is that BYD is much more than a car company—it's a technology powerhouse. The company develops its own Blade Battery, electric motors, semiconductor chips, hybrid systems, and energy storage solutions, giving it control over almost its entire production chain. Its most recent annual revenue was around 3.5–4 trillion Thai Baht. What amazed me the most is that BYD now has more than 110,000 R&D engineers, making it one of the largest automotive research teams in the world.
That tells us something important: BYD didn't become the world's No. 1 EV brand because of marketing—it got there through technology and product excellence.
That's why, when a company that already leads in technology begins investing more heavily in its brand image and choosing official presenters, it's not because it "needs more fame." Instead, it's about strengthening its brand value, building stronger emotional connections with consumers, and expanding its customer base. That's what industry leaders do once they've reached the top. Another interesting point is that BYD has never been a brand that signs celebrity ambassadors indiscriminately. Over the years, it has worked with well-known names such as Leonardo DiCaprio, singer Wang Leehom, Asian snooker champion Zhao Xintong, renowned Filipino actor Alden Richards, and Daniel Craig for DENZA, BYD Group's premium automotive brand….Looking at BYD's partnerships, it's clear that the company usually selects celebrities for a specific market, a particular vehicle lineup, or a strategic business objective. That's why I don't see Lingling becoming the First Presenter of BYD Thailand as just another endorsement added to her résumé. To me, it's a very meaningful move and a strong signal that BYD sees in Lingling an image and influence powerful enough to support the brand's long-term growth strategy in one of Southeast Asia's most important automotive markets.
So, Why Lingling?
To me, the answer is actually quite straightforward.
Lingling has an elegant visual, a positive public image, a clean reputation, and a strong influence not only in Thailand but across many parts of Asia. What makes her especially well suited to today's automotive industry is that she strikes a rare balance—she's sophisticated enough to elevate a brand's image, yet still youthful and approachable enough to connect with a new generation of customers.
At the same time, the automotive market itself is changing. In the past, buying a car was often seen as a decision made primarily by men. Today, however, women have a much stronger voice in family purchasing decisions. We're also seeing more single women, successful career women, and young families choosing electric vehicles. That doesn't mean BYD is targeting only female customers. In fact, I think it's the opposite. Lingling has the ability to help BYD broaden the image of a technology-driven automotive brand to reach new customer groups. Instead of being seen as a product that's purely technical or engineering-focused, a car can become part of a broader story—one that connects with lifestyle, fashion, success, and modern living. And perhaps that's the greatest value of choosing Lingling.
I've also seen comments like:
"Lingling may be a good fit as a presenter or brand ambassador, but what about her acting?"
Or:
"If she's an actress, she should just focus on improving her acting. Brand ambassadors and presenters come and go anyway. Brands can always replace them."
I think that's true—but only partly. Because when you look at it from a business and marketing perspective, the story isn't quite that simple.
Mercedes changes ambassadors.
Dior does.
Louis Vuitton does.
Rolex does too.
No brand signs someone forever. But the fact that a brand may choose someone else in the future doesn't diminish the value of BEING CHOSEN today. The real question isn't:
"Will they eventually be replaced?"
The real question is:
"Out of thousands of artists, why did the brand choose this person?"
A company generating trillions of Thai Baht in annual revenue doesn't sign a celebrity simply because they "like" them. Before making that decision, they have entire teams analysing brand image, consumer data, demographics, social listening, and marketing ROI. Choosing the wrong representative could cost the company tens or even hundreds of millions of Baht and affect the success of an entire campaign. That's why I don't think it's enough to say, "An actor only needs good acting skills."
In today's entertainment industry, being a top artist requires much more than acting talent. Reputation, influence, a positive public image, and commercial value are just as important. If acting ability alone were enough, then why do stars like Zendaya, Emma Watson, and Song Hye-Kyo continue to be sought after by luxury brands and global corporations?
There's another point that I find particularly interesting.
Many people assume brands simply need a famous face to promote their products. In reality, what matters much more is the performance of the campaign and the artist's commercial value. If you look at the official Instagram accounts of these brands, Lingling's Calvin Klein Reel has surpassed 20 million views, while her Dior Beauty campaign has exceeded 9 million views. Both stand out compared with many other posts published on the brands' own official accounts. Of course, views alone don't determine the success of a campaign. Brands also evaluate engagement rates, shares, saves, audience responses, alignment with the brand's image, and return on investment (ROI). However, when an artist consistently delivers standout-performing campaigns on the official accounts of global brands, it becomes clear that their public appeal and ability to connect with audiences are both real and measurable.
And that's exactly what made me realize something really interesting.
Lingling isn't the artist with the longest career or the most extensive body of work. Yet, within a relatively short period of time, she has been chosen by Calvin Klein, Dior, Dior Beauty, and now BYD Thailand. In marketing, this is often referred to as Commercial Momentum—the upward trajectory of an artist's commercial value. Major brands don't look only at an artist's current popularity. They also evaluate where that artist is heading: Is their influence growing? Have their previous campaigns delivered strong results? Do they have the potential to create long-term value?
That's why I don't think BYD is the reason Lingling has commercial value. Rather, it's very possible that BYD recognized that value and chose to partner with her at precisely the moment when her commercial momentum is at its strongest. BYD was already a global automotive powerhouse long before Lingling came into the picture. The company doesn't need a celebrity to prove its size or market position. But a brand of this scale choosing Lingling as its First Presenter in Thailand says something else entirely—it shows that her image and commercial influence have become significant enough to play a genuine role in the company's market development strategy.
To me, this isn't simply another brand deal added to Lingling's portfolio. It's the story of one of the world's largest electric vehicle companies recognizing her value and placing her at the center of a celebrity marketing strategy unlike anything BYD Thailand has done before.
"The world's leading brands don't chase trends. They choose the people they believe will become the next trend."
Acting talent is what earns an artist the love of the audience. Commercial value is what earns them the trust of the world's leading brands. These two qualities don't compete with each other—they complement each other. That's why I don't see this as just another advertising collaboration. I see it as recognition of Lingling's commercial value and influence from one of the world's largest automotive technology companies.
If that position could have been filled by just anyone...
BYD wouldn't have spent so much time and effort choosing one person out of thousands of artists.
Thank you, @BydThailand and Mr @Byd_wangchaunfu , for believing in Lingling and choosing her as the First Presenter of BYD Thailand. We truly appreciate this opportunity and are incredibly proud to see her represent such an innovative global technology company. Wishing BYD and Lingling a successful journey together.
Congratulations, Lingling. You truly deserve this opportunity. ✨
