🚨🪨Coal is heading for a record year.
International Energy Agency (IEA) now expects global coal demand to rise 1.2 % in 2026 to 8.94 billion tonnes, the highest ever.
9 months ago it forecast a decline.
The swing came from Europe, Japan and Korea, the markets with the strictest climate targets on earth, switching from gas back to coal because LNG stopped arriving through Hormuz and TTF went to 70 euros.
Keep the scale in mind.
Energy Institute data for 2025: China burned 92 exajoules of coal, 56 % of the world.
India 23, another 14 %.
Germany, Europe's biggest coal user, 1.5.
Together China and India are 70 % of global demand!!!
Indonesia and Vietnam have both doubled their coal use since 2015.
So Europe switching back to coal does almost nothing to the global number.
For a years ESG capital was scored on what it divested, not on what it kept running.
Nuclear was closed early in Germany.
Coal plants that should have been kept as strategic reserve were demolished.
This year then a strait "closed" and the continent with the most ambitious targets did exactly what Indonesia does: it burned what it could get.
The US shows the same reflex.
Coal consumption there rose 10 % in 2025, before the war.
Price beats policy in every grid on earth.
ESG failed on its own terms because it measured intentions instead of resilience.
The IEA says 2027 coal demand depends on one variable whether Hormuz reopens for LNG.
Not on policy... On a strait.
Energy security is the precondition for decarbonisation, not the alternative to it.
That is the lesson written in 8.94 billion tonnes.
BREAKING: Global coal demand will rise to a **record high** of ~8.94 billion metric tons in 2026 (up ~1.2% from 2025), according to new @IEA estimates.
The increase reflets the shift from gas-to-coal due to the Iran war and the impact of El Niño weather pattern on hydropower.
