Kurt Cobain never hid it.
He said he was basically trying to rip off the Pixies when he wrote “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”
Soft-loud dynamics, the whole thing.
“I should have been in that band, or at least a Pixies cover band.”
That honesty came out of a different world.
Small rooms, concrete floors, almost no lighting, a stage that was barely a step up.
No production, no choreography. Just the band three feet from the crowd.
Maxwell’s in Hoboken was one of them. The Pixies played that room in 1987. Nirvana played it in 1989.
There were versions of that room all over the country. Those were the proving grounds.
Can you hold a room when the audience is only three feet away?
Without Auto-Tune or a digital remix to hide behind?
“Hey”

People like @mario4thenorth like to present themselves as the voice of the average Canadian who’s just trying to get by.
Then they casually mention a $70,000 appliance package for their new home.
Look, good for anyone who’s successful. There’s nothing wrong with making money.
But don’t pretend you’re living the same reality as the average Canadian who’s worrying about groceries, rent, or their mortgage. If you’re shopping for $70,000 worth of appliances, you’re not exactly speaking from the same place as most people.
