And finally I expect that the tax authorities will take advantage of this to shakedown Nigerians who may/may not be paying taxes or paying the right amount to enrich themselves. But again we just have to wait and see.

My only issue with this tax discussion is that the larger percentage of Nigerians have no idea what this is about. And this isn’t about hiring tax consultants to explain things because not everyone can afford it.

but when has anything ever worked as it’s supposed to in Nigeria? I guess we will all watch and see. But something tells me this was just hurriedly implemented to capture more money from people in formal employment while targeting larger businesses as well.

Then there is the issue of Nigerian ‘anyhowness’, who is to say that people won’t be targeted and harassed with the powers being bestowed on tax authorities. On paper, they are supposed to go through the courts and follow processes before taking action

While most Nigerians have adopted the internet for social media and other things, filing your tax isn't something that can be done by just anybody, and again not everyone can pay a consultant to do it for them.

Secondly, what was the rush to implement it this January? If you have made projections based off of tax revenue then that is just poor planning on your path.

Apparently if you need blood transfusion in the hospital, you have to find people to donate the same amount of blood you used before you are discharged. While this makes sense, it can be challenging for people without friends or family close by. Witnessed this at LUTH btw.

@Ol0ye It’s the same with international companies in Nigeria. Once a Nigerian gets to top management, they will cut out all the benefits they enjoyed while climbing the ladder to show their cost saving prowess to the white man. Not surprised at all.

Then talk about curtains or blinds, a generator or solar system, and other electronics. The prices they have to pay is now astronomically high while their salaries didn’t increase in the same measure. Our choice of leaders do have serious implications.

With the current Nigerian economy, I often think about the people who are just starting out life who in 2015 would have been considered upper middle class trying to rent an apartment and furnish it as well. From standing fan to AC. From making a bed to making a wardrobe.
