On October 31, 1950, Earl Lloyd became the first African American to play in the NBA. At 21 years old, he was drafted by the Washington Capitals and played in their season opener. Lloyd was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2003.

On October 17, 1968, the Olympic Committee stripped Tommie Smith (gold) and John Carlos (bronze) of their medals because they raised their fists during the medal ceremony. The two received backlash for years in name of justice.

On October 10, 1917, American jazz pianist and composer Thelonious Monk was born. Heavily influenced by Duke Ellington, Monk is credited as one of the creators of modern jazz and bebop. His most notable compositions include "Blue Monk" and "Round Midnight".
