I loved my time at NMSU, but having worked at several of the larger and more influential athletic departments, I can tell you that NMSU is an extremely challenging environment.

You can pick apart every decision and every outcome, but those don’t necessarily fall on Mario as a leader.

They just have the financial means and community infrastructure to make most of it go away quietly without making the press. Unfortunately for NMSU, things get public quick…

He’s a great leader, great guy, and has broken his back trying to build NMSU Athletics in a community and an academic institution that don’t have the financial infrastructure to keep up with their comp.
