#OnThisDay in 1955, the Montgomery bus boycott entered its second month. It was launched the day after Rosa Parks was arrested in Montgomery for refusing to give up her seat to a white passenger, and marked the emergence of Martin Luther King Jr. as a national leader.

The boycott lasted 381 days, ending in 1956, only after the Supreme Court ruled that bus segregation was unconstitutional. In the meantime, thousands of Black people walked—often several miles per day—to honor the boycott.

As I walk every block of NY12 to meet, hear the concerns of, and find solutions for the people of this district, I honor that tradition.

We all have loved ones affected by cancer. Just last night, I learned that a mentor and friend has been diagnosed with brain cancer. 

But we can’t lose hope. 

This World Cancer Day, I want to highlight the Cancer Moonshot Initiative, and to give former President Biden credit for his relentless focus on curing cancer, culminating with this. In bleak times, it’s a reminder of the federal government’s capacity to marshal resources for good - and that American leadership can be as empathetic as it is mighty. 

In 2025, Wired reported that amidst the Trump Administration’s chaotic approach to public health, “[t]he moonshot might have lost its chance to land.” But just yesterday, Congress appropriated more money to the National Cancer Institute than ever before. As Representative, I’ll do everything I can to keep the Moonshot on its trajectory.

This BHM let’s celebrate the life & legacy of Woodie King Jr, who died last week.

In the 1970s, my love of theater was born inside the magic spaces he created on the LES. I saw my first play EVER at his struggling New Federal Theater in the basement of my church St Augustine’s.

Then Woodie moved his theater to the Henry Street Settlement and grew it into a force, a platform for Black talent that gave Denzel Washington, Phylicia Rashad & Chadwick Boseman their start, changing the landscape of American theater.

As a friend said today, “Woodie belonged not just to us, not just to NYC. He belonged to the world.”
