Some stories stay with you long after the headlines fade.
On 14 October 2015, 19-year-old Bryce Carlinsky was severely injured when a temporary pedestrian and cycle bridge structure collapsed onto the M1 highway near Grayston Drive in Sandton, Johannesburg. As journalists, we report on tragedies as they unfold. We document the facts, capture the images and tell the stories. But what happens to the people behind the headlines and to the journalists who carry these stories home?
This is one of the experiences explored in my recently published book, Behind the Headlines: The Stories Journalists Carry Home.
The book reflects on the human side of journalism, the emotional weight of covering traumatic events and the stories that remain with us long after the cameras stop rolling.
Today, on the anniversary of this tragic incident, I reflect on the importance of remembering the human lives behind the news and recognising the emotional realities of those who report it.
Because behind every headline, there is a human story.

Three weeks after I moved into my new flat, I found a note under my door. It said, in tiny, perfect handwriting: "Your TV is too loud. – 4B."
I felt awful. I've never been the loud neighbour. I stood in the hall with the note, then went straight to the shop and bought a $9 box of biscuits. I wrote "sorry!!" on a card, knocked on 4B and braced myself.
The door opened. A woman in her late 70s, in a lilac cardigan, holding a TV remote.
I said, "I'm so sorry about the noise. I'll keep it down."
She looked at the biscuits, then at me, and said, "No, it's not that."...
Did you know that today, in 1990, Johannesburg hosted the first Gay Pride March in South Africa? This historic march not only celebrated LGBTQIA+ pride but also served as an anti-Apartheid demonstration.
Organized by the Gay and Lesbian Organisation of the Witwatersrand (GLOW), it attracted around 800 participants. Esteemed speakers included Beverly Ditsie, Simon Nkoli, and Justice Edwin Cameron.
Let’s honour this significant milestone in our journey for equality! #pridemonth #UnityInDiversity
