Maaloula Under Sectarian Tensions: Church Authorities Call on Syrian Leadership to Intervene

The historic town of Maaloula, renowned as a symbol of religious and cultural coexistence, is witnessing escalating tensions following a series of individual incidents that have snowballed into a sectarian conflict between Muslims and Christians in the area.

According to church sources, 80 Christian families have fled the town in recent weeks out of 325 families, driven by mounting threats and pressure targeting their properties and safety. Four Christian homes have been seized, and Christians have been completely disarmed, sparking significant existential concern among the community.

A church source noted that the roots of these tensions trace back to the period following the Syrian regime’s recapture of Maaloula about a decade ago. At the time, some Muslims were barred from returning to the town, accused of collaborating with militants in committing killings, kidnappings, and destruction against Christians and their churches. However, after the regime’s fall, those individuals returned to Maaloula and reportedly pressured Christians, accusing them of supporting the Assad regime.

The Incident That Ignited the Crisis

The most prominent incident occurred on the morning of December 26, when Abdel Salam Diab and his father broke into a farm belonging to a Christian man, Ghassan Zakhem, intending to steal. This led to an armed confrontation that ended with Abdel Salam’s death. While the incident was described as an isolated case, it was framed as a religious conflict, portraying Christians as aggressors targeting Muslims.

Surveillance cameras at the farm documented the attempted break-in, prompting Ghassan and his son Sarkis to rush to the scene after requesting support from the security committees, which failed to respond despite their promises. A shootout ensued, resulting in the death of the intruder. Ghassan later surrendered himself to Father Fadi Barakel, who turned him over to the relevant authorities in Damascus to prevent further escalation.

Repeated Provocations

Reports indicate that tensions were brewing even before this incident. Christians in the town had been subjected to death threats, forced eviction from their homes, and land confiscation. Properties belonging to Bashar Shahin’s family were also seized, despite some Muslims defending them.

Other provocations included religious harassment, such as gunfire being fired near a priest distributing Christmas gifts to children and reports of Christians being spat on while walking through the town.

Church’s Appeal and Fears of Escalation

Church authorities in Maaloula issued an urgent appeal to HTS to intervene and restore stability in the town. They also called for the presence of leaders from Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham instead of the Suleiman Shah faction, which was accused of failing to protect residents.

The church emphasized that any solution must be fair and just for all parties, urging the promotion of peaceful coexistence and the return of displaced families to their homes.
