Eighteen percent. That’s how many doctors still own the room they practice in. The other 82 swapped the deed for a badge, a scrub-color policy, and a Press Ganey score that sets their bonus.
Nobody outlawed private practice.
They acquired it one burnout at a time and filed it under alignment.

Employed physicians frustrate me at times.
They complain about autonomy and burnout… yet stay silent on issues like Medicare reimbursement.
They don’t seem to see the irony.
@HJYouga made a terrific point recently:
Employed physicians are increasingly disconnected from how money flows.
They often don’t know what they generate.
They don’t see the billing.
And they’re paid through hospital markups and system-level subsidies.
But here’s the problem:
The less connected you are to direct revenue, the less control you have.
And once that control is gone — you’re just labor.
Medicare reimbursement matters.
Not just for private practice, but for every physician who wants a seat at the table.
Hospitals get 3.1% INCREASE from Biden admin and they say it’s not enough. Doctors get 3.36% DECREASE from Biden admin after 20 years of failing to keep physician pay up with costs and inflation. If it’s not enough for hospitals it’s not appropriate for MD small businesses either
Excited to bring a @UMassVascSurg tradition to our practice. Our stellar PA student presenting a case of a popliteal aneurysm for our attendings, staff, and students. #pizzarounds
It’s about time to make progress on this issue. Noncompetes are about as un-American as it gets. I expect the hospital lobby and some radiology groups would be against this.
