A guy had 35 Philips Hue smart bulbs scattered across 8 rooms.

He turned them on and off by voice. He changed them to warm white at night. That was it.

35 bulbs. $1,200 invested. Used like $8 light switches that respond to "Hey Alexa."

His friend a smart lighting designer who builds Hue installations for luxury homes and hotels came over for dinner, watched him say "Alexa, turn on the living room lights" for the 4th time that evening, and said:

"You spent $1,200 on the most advanced consumer lighting system in the world. And you're using it as a voice-activated on/off switch. Your Hue system can make your lights act as motion sensors without motion sensors. It can map the physical position of every bulb in a room and create spatially accurate scenes. It can sync with live football matches. It can simulate sunrise to wake you naturally. It can do everything a $15,000 Lutron system does. You've just never opened the Hue app past the first screen."

He set up 11 features in one afternoon.

That evening, the lights dimmed automatically at sunset. The hallway lit up when someone walked past without a motion sensor. The living room shifted to deep amber during a movie. And the bedroom simulated a sunrise at 6:45 AM.

"Same bulbs. Same bridge. Same app. Completely different house."
