Today’s Lookout briefing dives into why tomorrow’s “Dirty August” kickoff could be a serious fire weather day for the Pacific Northwest. We walk through the approaching dry cold front, the expected wind shift to the northwest, and what that means for key incidents:

Coleman Creek (our top candidate to blow up), Grasshopper, Second Flat, the Brewer/Box Springs (Rowe Creek West Zone) near Mill Creek, and the rapidly growing Sinlahekin Fire in Washington. We look at satellite burn severity maps, recent burn scars that may help check spread, where indirect tactics and firing operations are being used, and how things like irrigated ag land and the marine layer (or lack of it) shape fire behavior. If you live in eastern OR/WA or follow Western fire behavior, this is a good one to watch before the wind arrives.

Yesterday, the Modrite Fire in Washington made a strong push towards the town of Inchelium, Washington. Crews and dozers worked to build line around the community and prepping structures.

The problem today, the National Weather service has forecast a “Particularly Dangerous Situation”, which greatly exceeds normal Red Flag criteria and are very rare. Fine fuels are extremely dry and 45 mph winds could create unprecedented extreme fire behavior on the Modrite Fire, with the fire having potential to make a six or seven mile run to the north if suppression actions are unsuccessful. The fire is now 40,650 acres.

* Full report released for the Lyons Ferry Fire burnover. Comprehensive report details firefighters trying to burn off around themselves before being overtaken by fire.

* Tens of thousands of acres of fuels treatment and wildfire mitigation projects were halted in Oregon due to environmental lawsuits. Groups sued Mt. Hood National Forest and the Forest Service, which stopped the fuel breaks and fuel reduction projects. Those same project areas are now totally burned.

* The USFS and USWFS released a timeline report for the Knowles Fire Entrapment in Colorado.

* France’s Interior Minister announced this week that they had arrested 162 wildfire arsonists in the last 25 days. France has now doubled the previous record for total acres burned.

* Alaska sends fire crews down to the lower 48.
