If you paid $599 for your PS5, you're going to hate this. Sony is about to sell the same 825GB digital PS5 in Japan for $348, and it went out of its way to make sure you can't buy one.

The Japan version only shows its menus in Japanese, and it won't work with a PlayStation account from anywhere but Japan. Even if your cousin in Tokyo shipped you one, you'd be stuck with a console that doesn't want you.

There's a name for this. Economists call it price discrimination, which just means charging different people different prices for the same product, like a movie theater giving seniors a discount. The hard part is stopping people from buying cheap and reselling, because otherwise somebody fills a shipping container in Osaka and flips PS5s on eBay in Ohio for $450. Sony solved that with the Japanese language, and honestly it's a pretty clever fix.

Sony is willing to eat about $250 a console in its own home country because Nintendo has been absolutely crushing it there.

Look at Famitsu's sales chart for one week this September. Switch 2 sold 28,341 consoles in Japan, and the PS5 Digital Edition sold 7,082.

The regular PS5 with a disc drive sold 117, in the country PlayStation comes from, which put it 25 units ahead of the Xbox Series X.

Switch 2 has already sold 6.3 million units in Japan in about 15 months, while every PS5 model put together has managed 7.7 million in almost six years.

Nintendo actually ran this play first. When Switch 2 launched in Japan, Nintendo sold a Japanese-only version for ¥49,980, about ¥20,000 less than the one with other languages. Sony copied it five months later at ¥55,000. Then this April, Sony jacked up PS5 prices everywhere, pushed Japan's regular Digital Edition to ¥89,980, and quietly left the Japanese-only one sitting at ¥55,000. Since then the Digital Edition line has been basically the only PS5 anyone in Japan buys.

And then you notice the launch date. November 19 is the day GTA 6 comes out. The game is only on PS5 and Xbox, and almost nobody in Japan buys an Xbox, so if you live there and want to play on day one, you're buying a PlayStation. The PS5 boxes for GTA 6 don't even have a disc in them, just a download code, so a console with no disc drive costs you nothing for the biggest game of the year. Sony timed a $348 black PS5 to hit shelves the morning everyone in Japan suddenly needs one.

Sony is fine taking less on the box because every one of those consoles turns into years of game sales and PlayStation Plus subscriptions, and Sony takes a cut of every PS5 copy of GTA 6 sold.

Which brings it back to that $599 price tag in America. Sony blamed this spring's price hike on the global economy, and kept selling a ¥55,000 PS5 in Japan the entire time. Sony charges $599 in America because Americans keep paying $599.

I still remember when my colleague was kidnapped on her way home from work early this year.

For two months, her parents ran from pillar to post, borrowing money and begging family and friends to help raise the ransom.
