I was blown away by the incredible entries this year. Choosing was really hard but in the end we were both mesmerised by Lorna’s lyrical writing. Definitely one to watch!

Absolutely loved @StuartWhiteWM’s advice in the #WriteMentor newsletter this morning. If you’re in the querying trenches (or are about to be), do give it a read!

If the stakes are too low, your story will fall flat—even if you have compelling characters & strong writing.
But stakes can often feel nebulous. How do you even raise the stakes?
Here are 3 techniques to instantly amplify the stakes & make readers more invested: 🧵
Librarians, teachers and book shops - you asked and we delivered!

🧵I've been meeting with editors all week and asking most of them two questions. 1) What keeps you reading a submission? 2) As far as craft, what advice do you have for authors? And I'm sharing some of that with you today! #writingcommunity#amquerying
1/ This year my school library has loaned more books than ever before. I’ve spent 2 years building up a collection of books that the kids actually want to read - comedy, romance & crime are our most popular genres, comics the most popular medium. Years 7, 8 & 9
A difficult read, but this section below is what makes me want to redouble my efforts to encourage reading for pleasure. Reading does all this for me. And more.
As @frankcottrell_b says in the article, the solution is in our hands. Stop closing libraries. Retain school librarians and employ many more. Fund author visits to schools. Publishers, stop throwing cash at celebrities and focus instead on engaging young readers. We can fix this.
Huge thanks to @YALC_UK for revealing the gorgeous cover of THE BINDING SPELL by @mlinton8 yesterday! Cover design by Ali Al Amine!
A dark and atmospheric fantasy with folk horror elements - spells, legends and all things supernatural.
