A soldier collapsing while standing still for several minutes is perhaps the commonest medical incident you can have on parades or ceremonial duties. Not such a big deal. The following though are very important for future learning.

1. It is pointless to have a soldier stand behind the president and other dignitaries for hours without movement, during public engagements. They can provide protection by strategic placement around the area. Maybe it's time to review this.

2. The vulnerability that the soldier's collapse created in the president's security. No one knew what to do. Which tells me they had no contingency for such a scenario. This was really bad.

3. Again, for several minutes during the incident, the president wasn't the focus. That was a huge security flaw. No matter what happens, the president is always the principal who needs protection.

4. Again, on contingency, the soldier was moved only metres away to where the judges sat. He should have been moved out of the chamber straight after he was removed from the podium so that he could be stripped off his gear for fresh air and recovery. Keeping him in the chamber meant he remained the focus of attention and exposed the president again.

Conclusion: The soldier almost certainly suffered from exhaustion and will be back on his feet very soon. But this minor incident has exposed a huge flaw in the security around the president. It is perhaps by share luck that this happend in a secure chamber like that of the parliament. Had it been anywhere else less secure, who knows what would have happened to the president?

A big event is about to take place on the 7th of January. These lapses really need addressing before that ceremony
