-as buttoned up chemises/shirts, not even drawstrings, those come much later. The hem of the shirt would peak from the jacket, yes, but much lower than this. Lower than the neck for sure.

17th and 18th centuries (16th century too actually)'s womens fashion were all about cleavage. Of course women would wear shawls/neckerchiefs/fichus in cold temperatures (what I would expect here) - not for modesty btw, just as protection for the cold - there were no such things-
