The utter irony of Putin and Trump meeting soon in Budapest to jointly seal Ukraine’s fate should not be lost on anybody. This is the very same city where the US, the UK, and Russia came together 31 years ago to give Ukraine ironclad assurances that its territorial integrity would be respected and protected within existing borders in exchange for giving up a third of the world’s nuclear weapons (to Russia!). Ukraine trusted the US, trusted the UK, transferred all its nuclear weapons to Russia, and joined the Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Within 20 years, Putin effectively ripped up the Budapest Memorandum, ignored Russia’s pledge, and invaded and annexed Crimea. In 2022, Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine finally removed all remaining doubts about Putin’s imperial greed.

If treaties and agreements between countries are to be trusted, the US and the UK must stand by the original Budapest Memorandum and give the Ukrainians everything they need to push Russia out of Ukraine, as President Trump said he would do before taking Putin’s latest call. It is the only way for Ukraine to get its territory back and put an end to this brutal invasion.

If the US and Russia continue to ignore the Budapest Memorandum of 1994, how on Earth can Ukraine be expected to have any faith in yet another Budapest memorandum signed in the same city between Russia and the United States? They can’t.

On the night of June 6, Russia carried out a terror against the civilians in multiple Ukrainian cities – Kyiv, Lutsk, Lviv, Ternopil, Chernihiv, Kremenchuk, and others.

Unfortunately, there are killed and injured.

As always, Russia targeted residential apartment buildings, energy infrastructure, and other civilian objects. During the night, Russian forces launched 407 drones and 44 missiles against the people of Ukraine.

Killing, destruction, grief, and fear – this is all Russia is ready to continue to do instead of making efforts toward peace and ending this war. Russia understands only the language of force, and the U.S., European and other partners must do everything to make Russia feel the consequences of its terror – through sanctions, pressure, and by increasing the cost of war for the aggressor.

On International Women’s Day I am thinking in particular of the women of Ukraine who have borne the brunt of Putin’s 3 year war of aggression: from the wounded female soldiers I have met to the mothers of children now being pulled from the rubble left by Putin’s missiles. It seems incredible and tragic that their suffering - and their children’s suffering - should now be made worse by a US decision to cut intelligence and other support.

In the name of simple human compassion I hope President Trump will urgently restore that support, come to an agreement with President Zelenskyy and finally start to put the squeeze on Putin - the aggressor. That is the only way to bring peace. Trump can do it now and he surely must.

Ми в найдрібніших деталях пам’ятаємо той темний ранок 24 лютого. Коли в небі і на землі нас атакував підступний ворог, який хотів зламати наш дух, забрати нашу свободу, підкорити нашу Країну.
Він планував захопити Київ за два-три дні. Західні партнери давали нам трохи більше. Бо російську армію вважали однією з найсильн��ших у світі. У них було значно більше зброї, а їхня кількість на той час у п’ять разів перевищувала чисельність ЗСУ. Здавалося б – без шансів.
Але минали дні, тижні, місяці… Українці не просто захистили свою столицю, а й показали, що здатні об’єднатися, взяти до рук зброю і боротися. Сміливо, героїчно і самовіддано. Ми сильні і ми довели всьому світу, що можемо і будемо воювати за свою Країну🇺🇦. 
Вистояли тоді - мусимо вистояти зараз. Бо як би нам важко не було, але точно вже не буде соромно.
