This week, IFAD and the Government of #Tonga launched a new phase of the Tonga Rural Innovation Project (TRIP), a US$19.4 million investment to promote both the diversification of agricultural production and its commercialization across 128 rural communities.

“Building on the lessons from its predecessors, this third phase will empower communities and improve livelihoods through increased production and better market access. IFAD is backing Tongan communities not simply to endure a changing climate, but to thrive in it,” said Donal Brown, IFAD’s Associate Vice-President for the Department of Country Operations.

The project, as highlighted by Prime Minister Fatafehi Fakafanua during the launch, “brings government, development partners, civil society and communities together in a partnership founded on trust, respect and shared accountability.”

The IFAD delegation led by Brown also met partners at the New Zealand High Commission in Nukuʻalofa, to discuss collaboration in support of rural communities in Tonga and across the Pacific, an increasing priority for IFAD.

Earlier this year, IFAD launched the Pacific Islands Regional Strategic Opportunities Programme (RESOP), which guides IFAD’s investment and engagement to address shared challenges of rural poverty, food insecurity, climate vulnerability, and geographic isolation across 13 Pacific Island Countries through 2033.
