I resolve never to say anything negative about another person unless it fully meets these conditions: it must be consistent with the highest standard of Christian integrity and genuine love for people; it must reflect true humility and an honest awareness of my own sins and shortcomings; and it must conform to the Golden Rule. Furthermore, whenever I have spoken critically about someone, I commit to bringing those words back to this standard and testing them honestly against it.

Two needed spiritual practices for 2024: digital fasts and willful ignorance.

Digital tech wants you *to want* to be omnipresent and omniscient. It lies to you and tells you it is doable. This is the Lie offered by the Serpent: “you can be like God.”

The desire for omnipresence will destroy your ability to love as you’ll overlook people in proximity to you.

Your desire for omniscience will make you anxious as your information intake dramatically eclipses your ability to act.

A digital fast is a weekly or monthly spiritual discipline where you separate yourself from your adult pacifier (phone). Start with 90 minute phone-free trips to the park or 18 hour device-free sabbaths.

Willful ignorance functions similarly. Regularly choosing to not chatGPT or Google something you’d ordinarily want to learn about and instead embracing the feeling of ignorance and make peace with it. “Have you heard about what’s going on in Russia?” “No, and I’m not going to.”

Willful ignorance also looks like being off of social media for 48 hours and not “catching up” on what your friends have been up to.

In the parable of the Good Samaritan Jesus teaches us that our neighbors are those we can see and serve in love. Be a neighbor and practice digital fasts and willful ignorance.
