When Marlon Brando arrived on the set of The Godfather, he was only 47 years old. Don Vito Corleone, however, was meant to be an aging Mafia patriarch with a face that carried decades of power, violence, and responsibility.
Brando had an idea.
For his screen test, he stuffed Kleenex tissues into his cheeks because he imagined Corleone should look like a bulldog. The look convinced director Francis Ford Coppola, but tissues were never going to work for an entire film.
Legendary makeup artist Dick Smith, together with dentist Henry Dwork, created a custom dental appliance that pushed Brando's cheeks outward. Combined with gray hair, carefully applied wrinkles, age spots, and subtle makeup, it transformed a 47 year old actor into one of the most believable old men in cinema.
The mouthpiece did more than change his appearance. It altered the way Brando spoke, giving Don Corleone that slow, raspy voice that audiences still recognize more than 50 years later.
The dental appliance from the film still exists today and is preserved at the Museum of the Moving Image in New York.
Brando's performance earned him the Academy Award for Best Actor, though he famously declined the Oscar in protest of Hollywood's treatment of Native Americans

New: Joe Rogan debates NFL legend Terry Bradshaw on whether or not Ivermectin should be taken by humans:
ROGAN: “Ivermectin won the Nobel Prize for use in human beings. It’s an anti-parasitic with antiviral properties.”
BRADSHAW: “I used to give Ivermectin to my cattle. It’s a cattle dewormer.”
ROGAN: “It cured me when I had Covid so CNN started attacking me because they wanted everyone vaccinated. They put a green filter over my face to make me look sick.”
BRADSHAW: “I had a brain surgeon recommend Ivermectin to me. I could never rationalize that kind of thinking.”
ROGAN: “It is a dewormer, but it was actually invented for humans. We’re mammals so we have similar medicines. It stops viral replications.”
BRADSHAW: “Is it actually proven though? I wasn’t going to take that no matter what. I’m married to my doctor and she says we’re not taking that.”
ROGAN: “The reason they told people not to take Ivermectin was because they wanted everyone vaccinated so they could make a lot of money. It wasn’t because the vaccine was effective.”
