I learned that filmmaking is a community effort, and that it’s important for me that this film has a positive impact on the dancers and activists who shared their stories. I learned to build strong relationships first before filming.
I was inspired by the work of community media centers in Chiapas, Mexico, and the work of local indigenous filmmakers to show a side of their state not portrayed in the mainstream media. Groups like Koman Ilel and Promedios have done important work in that region.
