Yesterday in London, I helped a leader design a 20-year wealth plan and legacy.

During lunch, I was asked a question: “Subomi, why do you readily hand over projects, ideas and equity when your work is done? Other people would try to insert themselves into what they are building so they can make profit for years.”

At the time I had no coherent answer, but today I do.

It stems from having worked for and served Mr. Leke Alder for 20 years at Alder Consulting.

I am one of the best at what I do and know this objectively. I am also multi-talented.

As a SEC-licensed fund manager, I advise high-net-worth individuals. In my capacity as a global entrepreneur, I have built businesses in multiple jurisdictions. In my daily work, I am an operations whiz who excels at finding new revenue streams where none previously existed.

Curiously, I am a brand strategist and creative who has received awards for songwriting and marketing communications. Finally, I am a scientist with an IQ that has been independently assessed with interesting results.

Yet, I chose to serve for 20 years.

Serving did not diminish me or make me second best. Rather, it refined me and helped to develop everything that I am, because I was in an environment that promoted growth and full expression. In that vein, I was fortunate to work for Mr. Alder before striking off on my own. While serving, I also learnt to be humble, supportive and discreet. And, I understood power from a young age.

Today, I am better equipped for life and success because of everything I learnt while working for Mr. Alder. On my birthday, he gave me the blessing of a father. The Christians on my timeline know the significance of that.
