Be gentle with your mother. Look at the woman who gave you your very first breath, because one day, the silence she leaves behind will be the loudest thing you have ever heard. We often walk through life treating our mothers like permanent fixtures of the house, as reliable as the walls and as overlooked as the air we breathe, forgetting that she is a fragile human being carrying a world of hidden bruises.

It is easy to be impatient when she asks the same question twice or struggles with a phone screen, but that impatience is a debt you can never truly repay.

Half of what she does might not make sense to you right now, and the things she allows or the way she moves through the world might leave you feeling cold or irritated. One moment you feel an overwhelming urge to fold her in your arms and protect her, and the next, you wish you could just shake her a bit to make her see things your way.

But you must understand that one day, every confusing sacrifice and every annoying habit will finally make sense to you. The things she never told you about—the private heartbreaks, the exhausted nights, and the dreams she quietly tucked away—are the very things that hollowed out her insides and then built her up again. If you are blessed enough to still have her breathing the air of this earth, it is time you start digging in your gratitude-archives. You need to find the warmth in your heart, the forgiveness in your voice, and the same pure amazement you had as a toddler when you thought she could fix anything in the world. I beg of you to please, today and every day, be gentle with your mother. Do not wait for a special occasion or a holiday to show her she matters. Use a soft tone even when you are tired.

Listen to her stories even if you have heard them a dozen times before.

Because the inevitable day will come when her morning greeting will no longer be there to wake you. Her voice saying, “I love you, my child,” will no longer echo through the hallway. Her physical presence will be gone, and her voice will no longer be heard in the quiet moments of your life. When that day arrives, all that will be left are the memories of how you treated her. You do not want those memories to be filled with the “sharp edges” of your words or the regret of things left unsaid.

Be gentle with her while her heart is still beating, while her hands can still hold yours, and while you still have the chance to be the source of her smile rather than the cause of her tears.

Summers met with Epstein at least 14 times after his 2008 conviction. At Harvard. At the mansion. At the island.

Obama appointed him as Director of the National Economic Council in 2009 — one year after Epstein’s conviction. Not despite the connection. Because of it.
