Team DPRK @C4ADS have been working to uncover how "dirty" (e.g. sanctioned) ships obtain convincing "clean" identities to avoid the consequences of having a bad rep. We call it "vessel identity laundering". It’s like a crime thriller, but with ships. Let me show you. THREAD.

NEW: Ships evading DPRK sanctions have been using fraudulently registered identities to operate w/ impunity—in some cases for years. Our latest explores how vessel identity laundering is the biggest int'l security risk that you've never heard about. 1/10 https://t.co/1d1Rbeowg8

Our work in promoting transparency of beneficial ownership in the fisheries sector and analysis of UFWD connections counters these worrying trends. Read the Net Worth report here for more info: https://t.co/7D0tY54k5F

It’s a special feeling to see an investigative story that @C4ADS supported on the front page of The Australian while I’m in Canberra! The thread explores our findings on Zhuo Xinrong, the now OFAC-designated Chinese businessman.

But this isn’t entirely surprising. C4ADS investigates PRC investments across the Pacific and we see links between business associations and the United Front Work Department (which serves to promote CCP goals abroad) regularly in this region of the world.

The official story is something like “a billion snow crabs disappeared.”

If that sounds fishy to you, keep reading. Let’s dive into the ecology, oceanography, & geopolitical history of the Bering Sea.

.@Kate_OKeeffe is back to hold those in power accountable for their actions--or in this case, inaction.

"China’s U.N. mission said only that ships suspected of delivering fuel to North Korea 'have not entered Chinese ports since 2020.'"

Oh boy, let's unpack this one, shall we?

Lastly, a huge thanks to fellow authors @_LucasKuo, @Ah_Boling and Luke Snyder, who always work tirelessly to monitor the latest on DPRK shipping. If you need to find a bad ship, they're your guys. It is always a privilege to work with them.

We tell you how in the report (and a lot more). Check it out to see how we exposed two laundered ships and their MO. Y’all also need to see the awesome satellite imagery and AIS data that we used here, which we owe to @planet, @WindwardOceans, @Maxar, & @AirbusDefence.
