LKPD has multiple officers in the area of 16th and Haskell after a shooting that occurred about 9:30.
A male and a female victim were transported to an area trauma center.
Officers have secured the scene. We’ve located and detained several individuals for questioning and will provide more information when it’s available.
Please avoid the area.
On April 29, 2026, investigators with the Lawrence Kansas Police Department arrested a 31-year-old male masseur on suspicion of rape, KSA 21-5503(1)(A).
LKPD is asking anyone who visited Lawrence Thai Massage at the corner of 23rd and Haskell (951 E. 23rd) and experienced inappropriate behavior during a therapy session to contact LKPD investigators.
Investigators sent an affidavit to the District Attorney for charging consideration, which details events alleging non-consensual sexual contact between a male employee and a 19-year-old female massage client.
LKPD’s Investigators were dispatched to the establishment moments after the incident occurred. Crime Scene Technicians worked to collect evidence, which is now being processed.
Detectives interviewed the employee and he was ultimately booked into the Douglas County Correctional Facility and released while the investigation continues.

12:45 UPDATE: All students in classrooms have been moved out of the school to the football field. Officers and school staff are now working to ensure no students are hiding anywhere in the school, as some students did when the school went into lockdown.
Officers are at Billy Mills Middle School after a report of a concerning social media post involving a weapon. LKPD, DGSO and KHP are all on scene and have not found anything of concern. The school is on lockdown. We will provide updates as soon as they’re available.
12:30 UPDATE: We have begun to move students out of the school and out to the football field. To be clear, no one has been injured, and there is no known danger to anyone at the school.

Lawrence police are investigating a shooting that left two dead and one critically injured at 1600 Haskell Avenue shortly after 8pm. Responding officers found two people dead on scene, and one person was transported by helicopter to an area trauma center with critical injuries. More information to come.
