Why Did Microsoft Lay Off 7,000 Employees Despite Strong Profits?

Microsoft just laid off 7,000 people across the globe, and surprisingly, it is not because the company is struggling. In fact, Microsoft is doing really well financially.

So what’s the real reason behind the cuts? Here’s a simple breakdown :-

1. AI Is Now the Main Focus

Microsoft is investing nearly $80 billion into AI infrastructure in 2025. To fund this massive shift, the company is cutting costs in other departments, and unfortunately, that includes jobs.

2. Fewer Managers, Faster Execution

The company is trying to become leaner by removing unnecessary layers of management. This helps in speeding up decision making and aligning better with AI and automation plans.

3. Stricter Performance Rules

Employees are now being held to higher performance standards. Some roles were removed as part of this system, and those let go for underperformance are now banned from reapplying for two years.

4. All Departments Affected

This is not just about tech roles. Engineers, marketers, product managers, and even some in AI divisions were affected. It is a company wide restructuring.
