this is sick

[Luke The Dev @iamlukethedev]

I built an operating system where the AI agent isn’t another app. It’s part of the OS.

Today, Herald OS is open source and you can install it yourself 🚀

It’s built around Hermes Agent by Nous Research.

Talk or type to Hermes and it can work across your entire computer:

• Open and use apps
• Find, organize and work with your files
• Remember what matters
• Run routines and automations
• Build software while you watch
• Understand what’s happening on your screen
• Work across the machine instead of being trapped inside a chat window

And when something is about to make a change, you approve it first.

🎙️ Talk to your computer

Say “Hey Hermes” and just talk.

Native OS commands don’t need to burn model tokens. When you actually ask the agent to think, build or perform a task, that’s when Hermes gets involved.

⚡ Everyday superpowers

• Select any part of your screen and ask Hermes about it
• Pick a colour from anywhere
• Read a QR code from your screen
• Copy text from anywhere on screen
• Emoji in any app you type in
• When an app crashes, Hermes explains what happened in plain English
• One-click installs for Claude Code, Codex, local models and more

🐧 And yes, Herald OS Linux is an actual operating system

• Fedora underneath, Herald on top
• OS and Herald update together as one system
• Roll back an update if something goes wrong
Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, sound, display and battery controls
• Screen recording
• Night light
• Fingerprint and security-key sign-in
• Firewall closed by default

🎨 Make the entire OS yours

Themes don’t just change a wallpaper. They can restyle the whole system, including the terminal.

Drop in any photo and build a theme from it.

Or describe what you want and let Hermes design one.

You can also:

• Ask Hermes to create a widget, then choose exactly what that widget is allowed to access
• Drag the menu bar into the layout you want
• Create your own menu entries
• Put your own logo in About

💻 Run it almost anywhere

• Native Mac app for Apple Silicon
• PC installer from a USB stick
• Arch Linux package
• Omarchy integration where Herald follows your theme and adds itself to the menu and keybindings
• Or boot the full Herald OS inside a VM on your Mac with one command

It’s free, open source and MIT licensed.

It’s also still alpha, so expect rough edges. This is an independent project and is not affiliated with Nous Research.

I’ve been building toward this idea for a while:

Instead of opening an AI app on your computer, what if your computer itself understood what you wanted?

Now you can try it

He’s right though, in this day and age its so accessible to learn how to utilize these tools to their max, not everything is just handed over in a neat little box thats not what the main focus of Hermes was from the start.

It took 3 months after hermes desktop for some of my peers aside from @jupcodes and @grimcodes to even glance at what Hermes is not because they didn’t know about it, but because they didn’t care to delve into what it can actually do.

Those same people who refuse to utilize all this free knowledge available on X, Google, Github, Youtube are the same ones who entered SWE / Tech expecting a huge compensation out the door with minimal effort.

Reminds me of Uni, where I was surrounded by 3rd years and 4th years who didn’t even know Git.

If you can’t see the abundance of information available at your fingertips, sorry but you are a “normie”

[Teknium 🪽 @Teknium]

We aren't giving up on consumers. But they are dumb and I never made hermes for that purpose. I made hermes agent as a coding harness for me. That's why the CLI came out first, and then remote gateway channels, and then, our first actual move toward consumer with the desktop app.

If anything, the mobile app means we are going way harder on consumers.

I am not leading the mobile app, and I dont even lead the desktop app.

My focus is and always has been on making hermes the **best** agent. Not an agent ux for normies.

MoA is not for normies. 1000's of subagents is not for normies. The intense work we've done to improve terminal and coding capabilities of hermes is not for normies.

It has always been this way, and anyone who thought otherwise was mistaken.

the masses yearn for OpenRouter

[Riley Brown @rileybrown]

I want all my agents to have the same skills with access to every useful api - every ai model every scraper everything, and I want to be billed on one account. Too hard to ask?

[kanav @kanavtwt]

you’re not a software engineer if you cannot even SSH into a server

[Laz @Laz4O4]

@grimcodes keep going brother you’ve barely scratched the surface of your potential 🤞🏽

[Laz @Laz4O4]

@WescheNex1q this is sick, what hardware are u running on?

[Laz @Laz4O4]

@grimcodes @shadcn 🫡

[Laz @Laz4O4]

@grimcodes bro go look at the platform, its breathing new life 😭😭

[Laz @Laz4O4]

Just completed a total UI Overhaul with hermes while swinging around in sm2
s/o @grimcodes 🫪 shadcn call out was fire

[Laz @Laz4O4]

@yashmp2004 @NousResearch’s hermes clears

[Laz @Laz4O4]

Can confirm
my non technical co-workers built their own platforms for analytics with api keys displayed publicly

[Kyler Johnson @KylerJohnsonDev]

Non-tech bro: software development is dead. Anyone can build anything now.

Me: No, they can’t. The average person can’t build anything non-trivial that wouldn’t fall over the second they had real users. They probably couldn’t even host it, let alone secure it. The average person can’t even communicate what they want well enough for anyone, AI included, to understand it without a TON of questions. LLM’s won’t ask non-technical people the right questions.

Non-tech bro: copium bro. Copium.

Me: let’s have a public build off then. Let’s see who can actually build a simple collectors inventory app and host it. I can do it in half a day. I bet you couldn’t do it in a month.

No reply. AI psychosis is real, folks.

[Laz @Laz4O4]

@therealviraat Hermes already solved this https://t.co/ZVPxe7TwRE

[Laz @Laz4O4]

been on codex for 3 months now utilizing it every day and night

have yet to see my usage dip under 30%

[Laz @Laz4O4]

@gregpr07 setting up an agent named grandpa exclusively to keep violet going

[Laz @Laz4O4]

@solopribuilds Ai does the construction Skilled engineers will still be needed separating great software from mediocre software

[Laz @Laz4O4]

debugging is a lost art 😂

[Priyanka Lakhara @codewithpri]

most developers don’t need AI agents. they need to read the error message.
