In 2017, Elmer Alvarez was homeless and had almost nothing to his name.

Then one day, while walking through the streets of New Haven, Connecticut, he spotted a check lying on the ground.

It was worth $10,000.

For a man with no home and little money, that piece of paper could have looked like an answer to every problem he had.

But Elmer didn't try to keep it.

The check belonged to real estate businesswoman Roberta Hoskie, and Elmer made sure it found its way back to her.

When Roberta learned that the man who returned her $10,000 check was homeless, she was stunned.

She later asked him why he did it.

Elmer's answer was simple.

“It never crossed my mind because I made a decision to turn my life over to God.”

What happened next changed his life.

Roberta helped arrange a place for Elmer to live, offered him real estate classes, and connected him with a job opportunity.

But their story didn't end with one act of kindness.

A year later, Elmer was serving on the board of Hoskie's Outreach Foundation, helping support efforts connected to affordable housing and people struggling to rebuild their lives.

A homeless man found $10,000 and chose honesty when no one was watching.

In return, someone finally saw him
