In 2017, Elmer Alvarez was homeless and had almost nothing to his name.
Then one day, while walking through the streets of New Haven, Connecticut, he spotted a check lying on the ground.
It was worth $10,000.
For a man with no home and little money, that piece of paper could have looked like an answer to every problem he had.
But Elmer didn't try to keep it.
The check belonged to real estate businesswoman Roberta Hoskie, and Elmer made sure it found its way back to her.
When Roberta learned that the man who returned her $10,000 check was homeless, she was stunned.
