@6sidedgames I unfortunately don't have the cycles to do a playthrough of Redshift right now, but I did pick up a copy. I'd be happy to move it to the top of the pile and do a good read through of it and the adventure you wrote as a start, if that would help.
@codemarvelous First two that come to mind are Outlive and Dead of Winter. This War of Mine might also touch on some of this.
Anything in particular mechanically or thematically that really screams "colony sim" to you? Is it base building, resource gathering, the people involved?
@grizzlycatbear@MerricB Oh, for sure. But for some players (D&D or otherwise - it's pretty pervasive), that's something to unlearn. Sometimes, players can't see ways to advance a particular story/quest without a fight and after goofing it, won't know what to do other than get TPK'd.
We have announced a plan for a system neutral open RPG license in collaboration with other game companies. We believe it will irrevocably and unquestionably keep alive the spirit of the Open Game License. Learn more:

I highly recommend joining @GilaRPGs on this journey to help test and develop RUNE. I've had a lot of fun playing it, discussing it, and crafting my own Realm.
@IronEchoGames I find very creative players can easily dominate solutions to problems without someone in the role of "judge" to help mediate, especially if there's not a system in place that allows players to specialize in a way they wish to contribute.
I feel the GM role is always evolving.
@IronEchoGames Oh, no, I think you answered fine the first time.
I agree that cognitive/prep load is absolutely one of the biggest things that creates a need for a GM. I would also add a table's tolerance for loose "skill checks" (if players need a more structured resolution system or not).
@IronEchoGames Very curious to hear your thoughts on at what point a system needs a GM (not just "may be improved by having a dedicated GM"). Is there a particular system goal or function that you think crosses a line and therefore requires a GM? How much can be designed around?
