💬 PIONEERS — When Pi’s native DeFi finally opens, what will it actually look like? 🤔

Let’s look past the hype and examine what’s already been built.

The infrastructure is no longer theoretical. Protocol 27 is live on Mainnet, bringing smart contract authentication and the groundwork for automated market making. The Pi DEX has already been stress-tested 242,000 Pioneers committed 15.92 million Test-Pi during the SLICE token launch.

Third-party DeFi is already live. Coixa, a self-custody wallet with swaps, limit orders, and liquidity pools, is now available on Android and web. Onramp Money: a KYB-verified Pi partner has teased an upgraded "Pi DeFi gateway" connecting Pi services with fiat deposits and withdrawals.

But the missing piece? Full DEX rollout depends on Super Node selection, which is still pending. Until that happens, Pi’s DeFi layer stays partially sandboxed.

My prediction: Pi’s DeFi won’t be a single “launch event.” It will be a gradual opening third-party tools like Coixa filling the gap while the Core Team finalizes decentralization infrastructure. The liquidity and utility are coming, but the timeline still hinges on Super Nodes.

Following the successful completion of the Protocol 27 upgrade on Pi Mainnet, Pi Testnet has upgraded to Protocol 28.

Protocol 28 improves how the network handles delays in transaction data and enables developers to upgrade groups of smart contracts at once and change stored data more safely as their applications develop.

All Node operators must upgrade their nodes to Protocol 28 by October 13, 2026, in preparation for the Mainnet Protocol 28 network upgrade on October 16, 2026.
