Motorists Association of Kenya wants a forensic audit of Kenya’s G-to-G fuel deal after Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni said Uganda had been using middlemen in Kenya.

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has revealed that the late Kenyan politician Cyrus Jirongo was the man who alerted him that Uganda was purchasing petroleum products through middlemen operating in Kenya.

Museveni says Jirongo approached him around 2019 and explained how Uganda was buying petroleum products through intermediaries, information that prompted the Ugandan leader to immediately task then Energy Minister Irene Muloni with addressing the arrangement.

According to Museveni, the problem was not resolved at the time, and Uganda eventually changed course after linking up with global energy trader Vitol in 2023, allowing the country to purchase petroleum products under a different supply arrangement.

Museveni says Uganda subsequently secured significantly lower premiums, citing diesel falling from $118 to $83 per metric tonne, petrol from $97.50 to $61.50, and aviation fuel from $114.25 to $79.25 under the comparison presented by Ugandan authorities.
