I went for a walk in the park with West Ham manager Rehanne Skinner, her dogs and @GirlsontheBall to discuss mental wellbeing of WSL managers, how she managed it, the challenges & what more needs to be done. Interview here ✍🏻 👇🏻 #whufc

West Ham’s Rehanne Skinner spoke honestly and bravely to us about the extra support she wants managers to have in the WSL and the care needed for players when reflecting on World Mental Health Day. #whufc 👇🏻
Rehanne Skinner on Matt Beard: I think from our part it's devastating news for his family, for everybody that knows Matt. I remember my first game against him, he was the manager at Chelsea in the first ever WSL game and I was Arsenal at the time. Those interactions on the sideline have been a lot over the years. When I got the sack at Tottenham, we weren't really close, Matt and I, but there was a mutual respect and we would chat about things... but he was one of the first people who phoned me actually. I think those are the bits that people always remember about him, the type of character that he was and how influential he'd been in the game.
For me, I don't know why any of the games were on at the weekend because the amount of people, players, coaching staff across the game that have obviously known Matt. I think the expectation on what people had to do at the weekend was not assessed properly at all. We're two years down the line from another massive tragedy, a player that we lost in Maddy Cusack. And I think the contingency plans around these things need to be looked into in much more detail. When you see some of the players and some of the staff that have had to go through the weekend... we shouldn't be putting people in that position. If we're going to talk about wellbeing of players and coaches you can't pay lip service to it. It has to happen in a much, much better space, and to be proactive with it, not reactive. I appreciate lists of numbers of people we can contact, we know that already. Those things that come out in those moments, we already have those in place. It's the, "what are we actually doing to be able to make sure that these types of things never happen again?"
I posted this 1 year ago. It was the one year anniversary of the passing of Maddy Cusack. Exactly one year on we lose Matt Beard. Two (manager & player) incredible humans lost to what is supposed to be our beautiful game. I will ask the same question again??
Truely sad & shocking. My thoughts are with his loved ones, the staff that worked alongside & players under him. When many people have come & gone Matt was a mainstay of the women’s game. His passion & dedication impacted many individuals & the game. Thank you for this. RIP Matt
