A boy from a small village who worked as a courier boy, as a newspaper delivery boy, as a cook in a small hotel, eventually moved to Bengaluru to build what is one of Karnataka’s fastest growing tea franchise chains, Malgudi Amruth Chaha!

A fascinating story is loading on @mundhebanni with Mr.Shivaraj Kumar, our next guest.

He comes from a very small village near Nyamati in Davangere district. He grew up in abject poverty. He had to abandon his studies as the family couldn't afford to pay for it. From courier delivery to newspaper delivery to working at a hotel, he did many odd jobs just to keep life moving.

But one trait kept him in good stead. His obsession to quality.

When life was very tough, someone suggested that he do an ITI course and try for a job at Toyota’s factory in Bengaluru. He did that and joined Toyota’s assembly line. He worked there for about 12 years. Moved from the regular assembly line to even working on luxury models that Toyota was manufacturing.

He learned the discipline, the systems, the obsession around process that Japanese companies are known for. He imbibed that deeply.

When he decided to start something on his own during COVID, he carried that mindset with him.

He started a small tea outlet. He had no background in business. What he had was a simple belief that tea is something people will drink at least twice a day. But he did not want to open just another tea shop.

He wanted a clear difference.

He focused on sourcing high quality tea directly from estates in Darjeeling and Bhutan. He wanted to ensure it was chemical free, without preservatives, additives, or artificial colours. And he built processes to maintain that quality from procurement to the final cup.

That is how Malgudi Amrut Chaha started.

From one outlet, it kept growing steadily. Today, it operates 78 outlets across Karnataka through a franchise model and does around 30 crore in annual turnover.

This is not a dramatic struggle story in business. His struggles were in life. In business, it was about discipline, systems, and consistency.

He remains the same simple man. Very sharply focused on business. Deeply committed to quality. Actively helping his franchise partners succeed.

This is the first time on Mundhe Banni that we are featuring a small business owner. So far, we have mostly spoken to tech startup founders and venture backed journeys.
