The Labor government’s decision to lift biosecurity restrictions on beef imports from the US was a strategic move.

Hand wringers are jumping up and down about it - likely for political reasons in most cases - but the reality, according to media resources, is that the US has been able to export its beef to Australia since 2019 - when the coalition were in government. The only exceptions then were beef sourced from certain countries because of the concerns of mad cow disease.

The idea is to appear to placate the tangerine you know who while keeping Australia’s export industry with the US alive. Whether it will reduce tariffs or tantrums is anybody’s guess.

It doesn’t really matter. The tariffs imposed by the US at the end of the day will only affect the end user - US consumers.

Meanwhile, Australia exports less than 4% of everything to the US. Australia’s biggest trading partner is China.

Win-win… and we have the choice not to eat the beef and eat higher-quality Australian beef. As I don’t eat red meat - it’s not a me problem.

National David Littleproud wants an independent inquiry because he says Labor are doing it to appease the tangerine you know who.

The US needs 17 new subs before they make one for Australia. They’re building 1.2 per year, so 15 years minimum and that ignores the subs the US needs to retire.
