I visited the wife of the late Dr Ogbonnaya Onu to express my condolences on the passing of her husband. It was a difficult moment for me as I had worked closely with him during our time in the federal cabinet and admired him greatly. 

I shared with Mama how much Dr Onu meant to me and the country during my visit. He was a dedicated advocate for good governance, transparency, and accountability and played a pivotal role in the struggle to establish democracy in Nigeria. His selfless act of resigning as the All People’s Party (APP) presidential candidate in favour of Chief Olu Falae exemplified his dedication to the greater good of the country and his prioritisation of national interests over personal ambition during the 1999 presidential elections. He also served meritoriously as Governor of Abia State and Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, championing initiatives for national development. His prodigious intellect, capacity, stellar character and compassionate love for the Nigerian people were evident throughout this period.

Dr. Onu’s visionary leadership and dedication to serving our country will be greatly missed. I pray that God will comfort his family and loved ones during this difficult time and that his legacy will continue to inspire us to uphold the values of democracy, justice, and good governance.

May his soul rest in peace.
