Envy is the painful awareness that someone else has something you want—status, success, looks, relationships, possessions—and the accompanying resentment that they have it and you do not. Hate is a stronger, more active aversion. It is the desire that the other person (or group, idea, or thing) suffer, be diminished, or cease to exist in its present form. Hate can arise from envy, from perceived injury, from ideological difference, or from pure antipathy. Where envy watches and resents, hate wants to act against.
They reinforce each other. Envy often curdles into hate when the envied person continues to thrive or when the gap feels permanent. Hate, once established, can keep envy alive by preventing any generous interpretation of the other person’s success. Both are self-poisoning: they keep attention fixed on the other rather than on one’s own agency or improvement
