A frustrated visionary figuring out how to live sustainably a day at a time. Supports a just transition from coal at the pace and scale South Africa can afford.
It was not 'intense media scrutiny'
It was a racist media lynch mob where the whole media joined in to make it impossible for him to see a way out. And Cambridge sat by and left him to the wolves 😡
Jimmy Mohlala (44)
He was a South African politician, and speaker of the Mbombela local municipality. Early 2008 he blew the whistle on alleged tender irregularities involving Mbombela municipal manager and the awarding of R1.2 billion construction contracts for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
On the 4th of January 2009, armed men confronted him and his 19 year old son outside their home in KaNyamazane, Mpumalanga. His son was shot in the ankle and then they fatally shot him as he tried to flee, he passed away on the way to the hospital. No one has been convicted of his murder and the case remains one of SA's well known political assassination cases.
His family has continued to seek justice.💔🇿🇦
Comment: In 1999, I joined the Financial Mail and one day put up my hand to ask: “Why don’t we have black and women columnists?” Met with the usual “We can’t find any,” I started the Little Black Book. In 2026, we still can’t find any?
I quit when, appointed managing editor, I was put under the tutelage of a (white older) colleague whose knowledge of the political economy was not near as good as mine. Always the trainee, the mentee, the wannabe.
Come on, people! Do we need a Big Black Book?!
