About the Maguire handball and “goal” versus Ipswich today.
When VAR reviewed Harry Maguire's goal against Ipswich today, the officials were not asking whether Maguire handled the ball. He did.
That much was visible to everyone inside Old Trafford and everyone watching at home. The question VAR was actually asking is a completely different one, and understanding that question is the difference between following football and understanding football.
Under IFAB Law 12, a goal is automatically disallowed in two specific scenarios involving handball. The first is where a player puts the ball directly into the opponents' net with their hand or arm.
The second is where a player scores immediately after the ball has touched their own hand or arm, even accidentally.
Neither of those scenarios applies to what happened today. Maguire's shot struck Jacob Greaves and went in off the Ipswich defender. Greaves scored the goal into his own net. The moment the ball deflected off an Ipswich player, the automatic disallowance provision was off the table entirely.
The second thing VAR checked was whether Maguire's handling was deliberate, or whether his arm made his body unnaturally bigger in a way that gained an unfair advantage under the accidental handball provisions.
With his hands crossed in front of his chest in a defensive shape, the arm position was not unnatural. It did not expand his body beyond its natural silhouette. VAR confirmed both points and the goal stood.
This is actually consistent with a position IFAB has confirmed explicitly in its own guidance. If a player handles and the ball goes into their own goal immediately, the goal is awarded to the attacking team.
What happened today was a step further removed than even that scenario. The ball touched Maguire's hand, then his shot struck Greaves, then it went in. Two touches separated the handball from the goal. The automatic disallowance rule does not stretch that far and was never designed to.
Now I’m not sure if the rule or its application is right but I just wanted to clear it up.
