📚 Our children's textbooks should be accurate. Not ideological. Not full of factually contested content.

On the 7th January, I made a complaint to @educateie about misinformation in their Junior Cycle English textbook, Louder Than Words. I am not satisfied with their response. This book should be removed from circulation and guidance issued to schools currently using it.

(I have many issues with this book aside from this specific complaint, and it is my opinion that it is a very poor educational resource that should not be used in any classroom.)

I have held off in posting this, hoping for a quiet resolution, but 🦗🦗🦗 over the last few months has forced my hand.

On page 446 (Naomi Osaka Wears Black Lives Matter Masks) the text states that Osaka wore "face masks with the names of Black people murdered by police," listing the names on the masks as George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery.

The claim that these individuals were "murdered by police" is factually incorrect:

• Ahmaud Arbery was shot and killed by vigilantes, not police officers. The three men involved (Travis McMichael, Gregory McMichael, and William Bryan) were private citizens acting without any official police authority at the time.

• In the case of Breonna Taylor, the officers involved were not convicted of murder. Taylor was shot during a no-knock raid when officers returned fire after her boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, fired shots first, believing the officers to be intruders.

• The text further claims that she wore the masks "to raise awareness of racist police killings in the US." However, neither in the case of Breonna Taylor nor George Floyd were their deaths found to be motivated by racism in any court rulings. For George Floyd, while Derek Chauvin was convicted of murder, the court did not establish racial motivation as a factor in the verdict. For Breonna Taylor, the investigation and trial did not include racial motivation charges.

There is no balanced presentation of the facts. There is no opportunity for students to critically examine the claims being made. The framing of the questions on the following page appear leading and designed to guide students toward a pro-BLM opinion. Concerningly, many students would walk away from this lesson believing that black people are being routinely murdered by police officers in the United States for no other reason but rampant racism.

Roland Fryer @rolandfr, a Harvard economist whose research examines racial differences in police use of force found in his 2016 paper, "An Empirical Analysis of Racial Differences in Police Use of Force," no evidence of racial bias in police shootings.

I provided all of this information in my complaint and asked that they correct future editions of the book and issue guidance for schools currently using the book. On the 8th January I got confirmation that my complaint was received and was told that they would engage with the authors regarding future editions and revert back to me.

Despite following up on the 6th March, I still have not received any further update. I do not accept merely updating future editions. This is my son's textbook. Something needs to be done about the fact that this is currently being taught to students! This is a highly contentious issue, and presenting this disputed narrative as fact in a textbook is simply wrong.

If your kid uses this book, preempt this lesson by showing them the below clip of Roland speaking about his research. If we can't remove it, let us at least arm our kids with the facts so that they can do the job teachers are supposed to - initiate open and honest debate about difficult topics.

As Senator Rand Paul hammered home in today’s Senate HELP Committee hearing, what’s the medical rationale for jabbing a 6-month-old with the COVID vaccine when it flat-out doesn’t prevent transmission—as even the former CDC Director admitted it only “reduces” viral load at best—and carries a serious risk of side effects? And why on earth give a newborn the Hep B shot right out of the gate if Mom tests negative for Hep B? Paul called it straight: there’s zero science backing these one-size-fits-all policies—it’s just dogma over data.
Bravo, @RandPaul—you nailed it by putting the burden on the CDC to prove why healthy kids need this crammed schedule, from day-one Hep B to infant COVID boosters.
Back during the pandemic, I even pitched my microbiome research to the @CDCgov, only to hear they weren’t even up to speed on it. Come on—shouldn’t they be exhaustively reviewing all the evidence, including emerging science like the gut microbiome’s role in immunity, before greenlighting a vaccine lineup for babies born perfectly healthy?

Went to grab some breakfast on the way to my office in Berlin this morning and popped into a coffee and bakery shop, it was early & I was the only customer there. I ordered a cappuccino, a pastry & a bottle of water. The guy made a nice looking cappuccino & put it on the counter with the pastry & water. He then said ‘only cash’ & I was stumped, I didn’t have a single euro in cash on me (stupid I know). I got a lecture from him about cash, freedom, banks and government. He was not originally from Germany but this guy should be lecturing classes on why economic freedom and cash are keys to freedom in general. Of course he took away the cappuccino & other stuff I’d ordered & I had to leave. He was not happy & neither was I. I then headed into my first morning meeting but his words stuck. After the meeting I found an ATM and walked the 1k or so back to his shop and paid him cash for his cappuccino. He didn’t want to take it but I insisted, I told him he’d put in the labour and ingredients & it had cost him. I also told him that he was absolutely right in everything he said about cash. I’m glad there are business owners like him still out there. If you ever read this, best of luck to you sir. I wish you good health and abundant fortune.
