✨Book Review✨
#AlterEgo by @lehenner
An incredible debut exploring inclusivity and self-acceptance that had me feeling all the emotions - not to be missed!
Thanks @Christina_Dem & @dialoguepub for my copy. https://t.co/uVtCYdQUHp
This by @lehenner may well be my book of the year. It starts in a whimsical almost ‘rom com’ tone but quickly sheds light on big life lessons by blending humour and drama. The structure moves the present narrative whilst filling in the back story and ends just right.
Thank you @lehenner for bringing us the unique, and wonderful Hattie and giving us a #book that those living with an #invisibledisability can see ourselves represented in which is sadly such a rarity. I resonated with the book and the struggles and frustrations Hattie faced.
@jounwin @thebookseller Hi 👋 It's the story of how my novel ALTER EGO nearly didn't get published, but then did because of a (very supportive) angry tweet from my agent, calling out the ableism in industry. Then we found dream publisher.
"Lionhearted in it’s exploration of disability and what it means to live with an indelible fate. Helen’s eloquent writing just hurts at times—but how it heals, too. ALTER EGO is a seriously funny and heartwarming book."

@ByYourBedside@dialoguepub Thank you so much for this 💜 and just to confirm, yes, I do have a physical disability, similar to Hattie's. Intentionally don't name hers (or mine!) x
Happy Disability Pride Month!! Tricky day yday as stranger asked out of blue what was 'wrong' with my legs & went on to tell me it's my fault, I'm 'lazy' and need to sit down less. After big cry I got home, sat on the floor and said "love you leggies" cos I really really do x
‘I just didn’t see myself represented in literature at all’
Helen Heckety @lehenner joined @BBCNuala to speak about her debut novel and disability representation 🔽
