It’s been 12 years since the people of Ferguson took to the streets in response to the police murder of 18-year-old Mike Brown and changed the course of history.

And it was 12 years ago that many of us traveled to Ferguson to join the righteous protests of young people determined to win justice. Instead of justice, the people of Ferguson were met with state violence, and the co-optation of a movement. 

From poverty to police brutality – capitalism seeks to control, jail, or kill us – to advance the interests of the wealthiest. We know that until we eliminate capitalism and its inherent need for policing and mass incarceration, we have to continue to educate, organize, and fight back the disease of police terror.

Today and every day, we are committed to continuing to say the names of all of those whose lives have been stolen by this vicious and criminal white supremacist system, and we are committed to continuing to fight for a society where our people's needs are met and our children can walk the streets safely, free of police violence.

Last week, 29-year-old Julian Pagan died in city custody at the Bronx Hall of Justice.

New York does not have the death penalty under state law. But mass incarceration itself is a death sentence. New Yorkers are dying before they ever see a courtroom.

Pagan is at least the fifth person to die in NYC Department of Correction custody this year. Fifteen people died in DOC custody in 2025.

We must redirect the billions propping up this deadly incarceration system into housing, healthcare, schools, jobs, and youth programs. That is what real public safety looks like.

Today marks the one month anniversary of ICE’s racist murder of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in the East End of Houston. 31 days have passed and Lorenzo’s family and those by their side still await justice. The ICE agents involved in Lorenzo’s murder have yet to be named. 2 of the 3 passengers who were in Lorenzo’s vehicle at the time of his murder are being detained by ICE. The Houston Police Department continues to collaborate with ICE agents, in some cases holding people for hours while they wait for ICE to arrive on the scene. ICE continues to roam our streets despite the majority of Houston opposing them.

Over the past month, more than any elected official or institutional force, it is regular Houstonians who have answered the call. Countless demonstrations, vigils, fundraisers, City Hall public comment sessions, and more have been organized by Houstonians who use the limited time in between work or school and raising a family to demand justice for Lorenzo. This month has also proven the effectiveness of unrelenting public pressure. After sustained action for weeks, one of the passengers in Lorenzo’s vehicle, Jose Trinidad Rojas Pliego, was ordered to be released. We celebrate this victory while acknowledging that the fight is far from over.

It is not one or even a series of powerful marches that scare the rich and powerful — it is when the organized masses take charge of the moment and stop at nothing to win the demands we deserve. We call on the community to join us in keeping up the fight and demanding:

1. Release the names of the ICE agents who murdered Lorenzo and prosecute them to the fullest extent possible.
2. Independent investigation now!
3. Release ALL of Lorenzo’s passengers back to their families!
4. End ALL collaboration between HPD and ICE!
