Against the Wind had its Peace or Poverty forum last night.
Some great discussions and excellent speakers @kristin8X of the @antipovertycent and @SueWarehamACT president of @MAPW_Australia
End poverty. Don't pay $368 billion for subs.
Kim Beazley claims the AUKUS debate within the ALP is resolved.
"There was no rebellion. In the end, support for AUKUS was resoundingly endorsed by delegates."
I wonder how many ALP members would disagree?

Another day, another secret? 🤷♂️.
The Attorney-General’s Department have just advised me that the National Archives wants @MarkDreyfusKCMP to issue a secrecy certificate over evidence they want to use to oppose public access to historical (2001) Timor-Leste related docs. #auspol
"This would mean more transparency about the price tag of training dozens of foreign militaries, maintaining hundreds of bases, and carrying out a range of covert and drone operations, among other things."

Attorney-General @MarkDreyfusKCMP can’t just turn away from the allegation made by the former #FOI Commissioner that the @OAICgov deliberately misled the Federal Court (in my “FOI delay” matter). It’s a serious public administration #integrity issue which he MUST address. #auspol
The Canberra Cult of Secrecy takes a new bizarre twist.
Too hot to handle, the official climate crisis report is allegedly so secret that the Albanese government won’t even reveal the date it was completed 🤐 https://t.co/wY0ntiPeZ3
Thank you @MaiyAzize@_EverybodysHome for pointing out that:
a) landlords can reduce their income tax bill due to interest rate increases and
b) there are 100s of billions wasted on negative gearing and CGT discounts – we should redirect this to public housing, obviously!
"The financial burden of AUKUS is enough to make us all reconsider this legacy of Morrison — from which Albanese and Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong should be running at top speed."

"The fact that you've got two whistleblowers on trial right now in Australia... sends a really chilling effect to other whistleblowers who might be thinking about speaking up."

"A compelling voice for rethinking Australia’s
national security
Sam Roggeveen’s Echidna Strategy rightly challenges
Australia to act as a diplomatic powerhouse, not a military one."

Public schools in Australia are underfunded by $6.6 billion every year, over a decade after the Gonski review.
Private schools have already reached their funding targets.
@JimboStanford#auspol
The Intergenerational Report would have you believe Australia won't be able to afford essential services in the future.
But in reality, we just need an honest talk about how *little* we tax compared to other nations #OffTheCharts#Insiders#auspol

"While the parliamentary branch got their way, the anti-AUKUS movement within the ALP will not go away nor will the growing opposition in Australian society."

How many more times do we have to list the 18 ways (no time for them all in this statement) that Commonwealth Rent Assistance sucks before people realise the fastest & most effective thing the government can do for welfare recipients in housing stress is increase base payments.
This is only 9 months.
So, at this rate Shorten is on track to EXCEED the number of "debts" issued under the Morrison government each year since #Robodebt was wound back.
"Lawful" or unlawful, recouping money from people in poverty causes mass harm: stress, distress, suicide.
“Just increasing supply is not going to solve the issue.”
Prof Morris reiterating our point that more homes doesn’t help people if those homes are expensive.
"Meanwhile, the American’s B52s and bunkers at Tindall, regional command centres in the NT, missile factories in Queensland, nuclear dumping sites in God knows where, embedded spies at Defence..."

Actually, having enough to afford the basics should be the last thing you have to worry about.
Tweaks won’t protect people from violence.
Centrelink payments above the poverty line and abolishing the partner and parental income tests are the most important things you can do.
"Of course, the misnomer in the “let’s spend big on defence to prove we can spend bigger on defence than the Coalition” is that the big spending is increasingly on offensive weaponry, not “defence”
