Yesterday, at the International Association for Mission Studies (IAMS) Assembly at UNISA, Prof. Isabel Apawo Phiri, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Blantyre Synod (UBS), delivered an inspiring lecture titled "Walking Together in Mission: Water Scarcity and Sustainability in Sub-Saharan Africa through the Lens of African Women’s Theology." Drawing on African women's theological perspectives, she explored the realities of water scarcity in Sub-Saharan Africa and challenged the Church to embrace its mission of advocating for ecological justice, sustainable solutions, and the dignity of vulnerable communities. Her presentation sparked rich dialogue on the vital connection between faith, environmental stewardship, and social justice.

Among the highlights of last week's engagements at the United Nations Headquarters was Unisa's participation as the only university represented at the Local2030 Coalition Special Event, convened on the sidelines of the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development.

At this high-level global platform, Unisa Principal and Vice-Chancellor Professor Puleng LenkaBula shared how higher education institutions can accelerate the localisation of the Sustainable Development Goals through engaged scholarship, innovation and strategic partnerships that deliver meaningful impact in communities.

Professor LenkaBula also met with the Honourable Seiso Joel Mohai, Deputy Minister in the Presidency for Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation, at the United Nations Headquarters. The engagement underscored the importance of strong partnerships between government and higher education in advancing South Africa's development priorities while contributing to the global sustainable development agenda.

As the International Association for Mission Studies (IAMS) Conference continues at Unisa, members of the university's executive management joined IAMS President-Elect Professor Thinandavha Mashau to welcome Reverend Professor Jooseop Keum – internationally renowned theologian, General Secretary of the Council for World Mission, and a Unisa honorary doctorate recipient recognised for his lifelong contributions to global peace, social justice and mission theology.

What began as a courtesy meet-and-greet evolved into a rich exchange of wisdom, ideas and perspectives. The discussions reflected the transformative power of academic engagement, demonstrating how dialogue across cultures, disciplines and contexts can inspire new thinking and strengthen international collaboration.

At the International Association for Mission Studies (IAMS) Conference at Unisa today, participants gathered with joy and gratitude as colleagues, friends and fellow pilgrims from around the world, united by a shared commitment to participating in God’s mission.

The day began with a meaningful morning worship service, followed by inspiring and thought-provoking plenary sessions that brought together voices from across the global church. Delegates heard from Prof. Bokyoung Park on Walking Together in Mission; Prof. Dana L. Robert on From Harare 1985 to Pretoria 2026: Walking Together in Witness; Rev. Dr. Xiaoli Yang on Weaving as Witness in Oceania: Toward a Poetic Eco-missiology in an Age of Digital Idolatry; and Dr. Estêvão (Stefano) Raschietti on Mission in the Latin American Context. Together, these presentations offered rich perspectives on Christian witness, intercultural engagement and the shared calling of God’s mission, making for a day marked by learning, fellowship and a renewed vision for walking together in mission.
