On the 82nd anniversary of D-Day, let us remember the courage and determination of those who served and sacrificed to secure our freedoms.

Their bravery will continue to inspire generations to defend the values those heroes fought to protect.

On Thursday, I was honored to join my colleagues in cleaning the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall ahead of Memorial Day.  

It was a solemn reminder that the freedoms we enjoy are only possible because of so many Americans who paid the ultimate sacrifice. Let us carry their legacy forward with actions that protect the values they died defending.

My family fled communism and arrived in the United States as refugees. The Soviet communist regime collapsed, and Cuba’s dictatorship will inevitably meet the same fate.

We must help guide Cuba toward freedom — for the benefit of our entire region.

May we soon celebrate alongside Cubans a true Independence Day, with Cuba Libre.

Just months after our family arrived as refugees from the Soviet Union, we met Carol Kitman in a chance encounter in Brighton Beach.

And after those first photographs, she was a constant and consistent part of our lives, attending graduations, weddings and promotions, always with her camera in hand.

We loved her and her dear husband Marvin. We will miss her deeply.

Carol Kitman was an amazing person. In 1980––just months after our arrival to the U.S., as refugees from the Soviet Union––she all but adopted me and Eugene and remained part of our lives for nearly 50 years. She and her wonderful husband Marvin were there at all of our major life events. They were precious to the entire Vindman family.

We loved them and Carol will be very missed. May her memory be a blessing.
