Do NOT start a faceless channel.
If you're reading this - chances are you're wasting THOUSANDS of dollars 💸🔥
This post is a result of :
- Talking to the lead developer of the YouTube discovery algorithm
- MONTHS of in-depth research
- Hours of conversations with some of the LARGEST creators
This is by far my MOST VALUABLE post yet. 📈
and it will only take 3 minutes to read (I timed it).
TO START OFF WITH - we NEED to understand the fundamentals.
To REGULARLY win viewership, you need market-dominance over a specific viewer-profile.
To get market-dominance, simply create “BETTER” content than what’s currently being offered to that viewer-profile (adjacent competition)
BETTER =
More clickable
More watchable
For a longer duration of time
Want to return
For that viewership to be SUBSTANTIAL - there has to be a large enough TAM (Target addressable market) for that type of content.
Inheriting EXISTING interest - NOT creating or FORCING interest.
So why are you wasting thousands of dollars,
Let's go back to 2019;
At this time, MOST formats and viewer-profiles had VERY low-barrier competition.
Many of the largest faceless channels made their start and - as a result - were able to reach profitability relatively fast.
They were able to re-invest into greater production quality, consistency, and management.
Over time - many of these early faceless channels have been scaled into media-companies and recognised brands.
Due to the compounded re-investment, they often have unique-selling points which form a moat (a barrier to prevent competition stealing their market share).
-
However, fast-forward to 2024 - and things are VERY different.
The majority of large TAM audiences are VERY saturated with faceless channels of increasing production-quality.
Outsourcing scripting, editing, presentation (voiceover), and even strategy - has become the new baseline.
With this in-mind - if you repeat the process of others - your content will NOT be "better".
You will waste money, and NEVER consistently achieve large viewership.
So how can you compete in 2024?
-
Let's take it back to the fundamentals we outlined above.
BETTER =
More clickable
More watchable
For a longer duration of time
Want to return
This leads us to the FIRST way we can achieve market-dominance:
-
METHOD 1 - Swim against the tide 🌊
Increase production-quality to make your content more clickable, watchable, for a longer duration of time, with viewer satisfaction.
This involves INVESTING in your team, training and educating your team - and also HEAVY focus in strategy.
For most MAJOR niches on YouTube - this method is only an option if you have a very large budget to play with.
It is the YouTube equivalent of swimming against the tide. You will spent thousands of dollars on increasing your CTR and AVD by a few percentage points at a time.
If this is not for you, use the second method.
-
METHOD 2 - Find your blue ocean 🪸
“Focus on innovating at value, not positioning against competitors”
Method 2 is about finding your place on the platform - where there is VERY limited competition.
To do this, STOP focussing on "niches". Instead, focus on audiences.
This next piece of information is arguably the MOST important,
and you should integrate it into YOUR content strategy immediately.
Step 1: Define your viewer-profile.
I use the following template to define my target audience:
Age Range -
(e.g. 10-16 years old)
Location -
(e.g. United States, United Kingdom, Canada)
Subject matter -
(e.g. Scary myths, fooling friends/story-based drama, cheating, experiments)
Common curiosity points and information gaps - (Exploration of myths, creative use of game mechanics)
Why Do They Watch -
(e.g Bored, Value, Storyline, entertainment, education)
Optional: Typical platforms of use (Where are they)
(e.g. YouTube, Reddit, Instagram, X)
Step 2: Research your ADJACENT competitors
Analyse OTHER channels targeting your SAME viewer-profile. If you don't believe you can make content that is:
More clickable
More watchable
For a longer duration of time
Want to return
Then CHANGE your viewer-profile so that they are NO LONGER competition.
The goal is to find a viewer-profile which is broad-enough to have a large amount of people - but small enough to ELIMINATE all high-barrier competition.
Step 3: Understand your audience and win
Think in the mind of your target viewer. Create content that they want to watch.
You can use tools such as https://t.co/tHNfl4II9o to find what content has worked well for them in the past -
then adapt concepts that have worked for DIFFERENT viewer-profiles in the past (such as MrBeast, Ryan Trahan, etc).
Human psychology changes minutely between target-audiences.
-
The goal of this post is to STOP you from burning thousands of dollars by creating a faceless channel that NO ONE will watch.
I outlined how YOU can achieve market-dominance - to achieve CONSISTENT and SUBSTANTIAL viewership across all of your content.
Now how can you return the favour?

🚨URGENT WARNING to all @YouTube Creators:
There are two emails currently going around impersonating @TeamYouTube - both emails are asking you to click on a link to complete a survey and answer a few questions.
DO NOT CLICK on those links or the button!
Yes, YouTube does invite Creators to participate in studies and they do ask Creators for feedback, but it will usually come from a no-reply type of @google.com email address (eg. [email protected])
@_JohnHammond posted the one he got - notice the email address...
Also, notice how "professional" the emails are (thanks ChatGTP🤦) so don't be fooled by the bad grammar and spelling mistakes.
I have now seen at least 10 of these emails from various Creators.
Spread the word ASAP!
