Yes, Peter Obi has supported the removal of the corrupt and unsustainable petrol subsidy system. But saying that automatically means fuel would sell at exactly the same price under Obi is pure speculation.

Here is a simple example:
Imagine two landlords both agree that a leaking roof must be removed.

Landlord A removes the roof overnight without preparing another shelter, and everyone inside gets soaked by the rain.

Landlord B prepares a temporary shelter, fixes the drainage, provides protection and then removes the damaged roof.

Did both of them agree that the old roof should be removed? Yes.

Did they handle the removal the same way? No.

That is the point Obi supporters are making.

Peter Obi's argument has been that Nigeria should remove waste and corruption, but also increase local production, reduce the cost of governance, secure the country, support productive sectors and cushion the effects of difficult economic reforms.

So the real question is not simply:

“Subsidy or no subsidy?”

The real questions are:

What do you do before removing it?
How do you manage the consequences?
What alternatives do you provide?
How do you reduce the suffering of ordinary Nigerians?
How do you stop Nigerians from paying international prices for fuel when Nigeria is an oil-producing country?

Supporting the removal of a bad subsidy system does not mean supporting poor planning, poor timing or poor implementation.

So no, it is not hypocrisy to support reform and still criticise how that reform was executed.

Obi can support removing subsidy. Tinubu can remove subsidy. Yet Nigerians can still legitimately judge the two men differently based on how they would manage the economy before, during and after that decision.

That is called accountability—not hypocrisy.
