A #Pager, also known as a "beeper," is a small, portable communication device designed to receive short messages over a radio frequency signal.

Initially developed in the mid-20th century, pagers were widely used for instant communication, particularly in situations where mobile phones were not available or reliable.

These devices primarily served professionals like doctors, emergency responders, and technical personnel who needed to stay connected, especially in remote or critical scenarios.

▪️How Pagers Work:

Pagers function through a radio frequency network. A sender transmits a message, which is then broadcast to a particular frequency that the pager is tuned to.

The message can either be numeric (displaying phone numbers to call back) or alphanumeric (showing a short text message).

Once the message is received, the pager alerts the user, usually through a beep or vibration, which prompts the recipient to respond using a landline or, later, a mobile phone.

Early pagers could only notify users that they had a message to return, but later versions featured digital displays to show messages directly.

Despite being simple, these devices were vital for instant communication, particularly in areas where mobile signal strength was unreliable.

By the 1990s, the rise of mobile phones caused a steep decline in the use of pagers, and by the early 2000s, these devices were largely phased out from mainstream use.

🔺Why Hezbollah Still Relies on Pagers?

Despite technological advancements, certain groups still employ pagers for strategic reasons, and one such group is Hezbollah. Recent revelations have shown that Hezbollah continues to use pagers, particularly among its military fighters.

▪️Reasons for Continued Use:

1. Low-Tech Evasion:
One of the main reasons Hezbollah still uses pagers is to evade sophisticated tracking and surveillance.

Modern digital communication, such as mobile phones or internet-based systems, can be intercepted or traced by adversaries, such as the Israeli military.

In contrast, pagers operate on simple analog or low-frequency digital signals, which are harder to track in real-time.

2. Security in Remote Areas:

Pagers do not require constant connectivity to a cellular network, making them more useful in remote or underdeveloped areas where mobile networks may be weak or compromised.

The devices can receive messages without revealing the user's exact location, providing an additional layer of operational security.

3. Limited Functionality:

The minimal capabilities of pagers can also work in their favor, as they reduce the risk of data breaches or signal interceptions that could compromise sensitive operations.

With a pager, fighters receive only brief, one-way communications without the vulnerability of active two-way conversations that could expose the group to surveillance.

▪️Hezbollah’s Acquisition of Pagers:

Hezbollah's use of pagers came into public focus following a recent cyberattack that revealed the group had procured thousands of new pagers from a Taiwanese manufacturer called Gold Apollo.

These devices were reportedly brought into Lebanon earlier this year, underscoring the group's reliance on low-tech methods.

A senior Lebanese security source mentioned that Hezbollah ordered 5,000 beepers from this supplier.

However, Gold Apollo denied directly manufacturing the devices, stating that another company, BAC, licensed to use their brand, was responsible for the production.

This demonstrates the covert methods the group employs to maintain its communication network.
