Home Affairs is taking a quantum leap into the future! We’ve unveiled the first-ever working prototype of South African Digital ID. Watch this live demonstration of how it gives you secure digital access to your documentation, enables remote verification, and enhances privacy 🇿🇦
Operation New Broom swept into Sunninghill, Joburg before dawn to enforce our immigration laws in an informal settlement and at local enterprises employing illegal immigrants. After already doubling annual lawful deportations, we continue our work to restore the rule of law 🇿🇦
Operation New Broom hit the streets of Ekurhuleni, where hundreds of illegal immigrants were arrested for deportation. With nearly 200 000 lawful deportations and repatriations since the start of this administration, our work continues to restore rule of law in immigration 🇿🇦
What happens when technology and partnerships remove barriers to government services? Minister of Home Affairs, Dr Leon Schreiber, shares how Smart ID access has expanded through the banking sector.

This weekend, two great sporting traditions come together as the Springboks and All Blacks take one of rugby’s greatest rivalries to @Ravens M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore.
I can’t wait for Americans to get a taste of this incredible rivalry. But what if we flipped the script and brought American football to South Africa? @NFL
From laggard to worldclass: Measured against global benchmarks at the AIM Congress this week in Dubai, our reform journey at Home Affairs is firmly on track to elevate South Africa into a world leader in digital civics and immigration services that deliver dignity for all! 🇿🇦
Now @TheCitizen_News has not only doubled down on “57 000” deportations when the actual figure is over 111 000 - they’ve also somehow turned R175 million into R157 million on their poster. Just outrageous misreporting about the work of Home Affairs.
Here is the second journalist within the space of 24 hours who misreports the most basic facts on this. Oratile Mashilo @TheCitizen_News looked at the below reply and proudly reported that deportations dropped “sharply” to “5 814” in 2025/26. It actually increased to 59 814.
She then adds the incorrect figure of 5 814 to the 2024/25 figure of 51 650 to arrive at a “total” of 57 464 deportations over two years at a cost of R175 million. But the actual total is 111 464.
Incompetence becomes dangerous when multiple media publications are seemingly so keen to fuel incitement over immigration issues that the verification of facts becomes irrelevant. It has to stop.

Here’s the reply to the parliamentary question. The total is clearly stated as R175 million for 111 464 deportations, which comes to R1 571 per capita. In other words: Home Affairs executing its legal mandate effectively.
Yet here goes an unnamed journalist - and presumably a series of editors - without the basic ability to read a number, breathlessly reporting R175 million as R17 billion.
Who is held accountable when sensationalist and incompetent journalism fuels fake news and incitement?
