For @barronsonline is @janetcho with stellar in-depth reporting on the #Genz YouTube filmmaker revolution featuring our exclusive #Rentrak data!
For Hollywood, domestic box office ticket sales through June 7 are at nearly $4 billion, including more than $1 billion in ticket sales in May, the best showing for the month since the Covid-19 pandemic, says Rentrak’s head of marketplace trends Paul Dergarabedian. “Modestly budgeted, cost-effective horror films such as #TalkToMe, #IronLung, #Obsession, and now the psychological horror/thriller Backrooms are proving that original and innovative films can indeed have mass appeal,” Dergarabedian told Barron’s. Film distributors like @A24, @neonrated, @FocusFeatures and others are increasingly offering their distribution and marketing expertise to independent filmmakers. #Backrooms opened the last weekend of May with a monstrous $81.4 million debut, taking in a per-theatre average of $23,665, according to #Rentrak. And even though ticket sales dropped to $26.2 million this past weekend, “at a budget level of around $10 million, it’s already a runaway smash hit with over $212 million globally so far,” Dergarabedian said. Just as impressive is Obsession’s unprecedented uptick in box office, from its $17.2 million opening weekend to $25.6 million in its fourth weekend, bringing its domestic gross to more than $156 million, which Dergarabedian said is setting a new bar for long-term theatrical playability. The horror film genre generated a record $1.43 billion in domestic box office last year, including $280 million from Warner Bros.’ Sinners, according to Rentrak. He said that even though production companies’ talent scouts are combing @YouTube for new talent, “the real key is whether or not this is an anomaly or if it will become a trend. I think because we had Iron Lung this year doing so well, and then these two films back to back that had everyone thinking, ‘Well this is the new paradigm,’ replicating this kind of success may not be so easy.” He notes that #CurryBarker, the director of Obsession, and #KaneParsons, the director of Backrooms, have been on #YouTube for years, so they weren’t overnight sensations. “They just seemed like overnight sensations to those of us who were uninitiated,” he said. “I think they just caught this groundswell of the Zeitgeist with younger viewers who love horror movies.” @blumhouse@jason_blum #AtomicMonster

Curry Barker's horror hit "Obsession" made more in its 25th day at the domestic box office than some of the highest grossing films of all time. https://t.co/r8gG4QHmQN
As the summer movie season of ‘26 unspools in a most unconventional manner, according to our exclusive #Rentrak data it’s remarkable how close revenue is pacing with summer of 2019 at the same point. Keep in mind that the summer of 2019 kicked off with “Avengers: Endgame,” a film that still holds the record for biggest domestic opening weekend of all-time with $357.1 million; talk about a hard act to follow. But this year is very different…. Notably, the summer of ’26 launched with @20thcentury's #DevilWearsPrada 2 pretty much the complete opposite of the former standard bearer, a Marvel movie, to kick off the summer. However, the anomalous nature of the month didn’t end there as May delivered a couple of very welcomed surprises with @FocusFeatures@obsessionmovie and @A24's #Backrooms @blumhouse films courtesy of the unexpected yet very welcome wellspring of @YouTube@YouTubeCreators & filmmakers #CurryBarker & #KaneParsons with both films over-performing and through June 7 adding nearly $300 million domestically to the summer bottom line. We should not forget @starwars@themandalorian and Grogu that while overshadowed by the aforementioned modestly budgeted horror juggernauts did indeed deliver the goods over Memorial Day weekend and has added $156 and counting to summer revenues. The “legs” (in the parlance of old Hollywood) of many films released in the pre-summer corridor, including April openers like @supermariomovie, @michaelmovie and even MVP March opener @projecthailmary can be credited with contributing to this summer’s pre-destined shot at over $4 billion. This past weekend @ScaryMovie gave a franchise best debut scaring up nearly equal box office domestically and internationally (who says comedy can’t travel?) as it rode the crest of a #GenZ moviegoing craze that’s “swiffering” the nation (and the globe). This foundation of strong box-office performers is something that the framework of the rest of the summer can be built upon and each film is an essential paver in the box-office revenue road. And this is not a fluke or a short-term sugar high as there are some amazing movies on the way including #StevenSpielberg’s @disclosureday set for June 12, @toystory 5” on June 19, @supergirl on the 26th and @Minions & Monsters” on July 1. If that wasn’t enough, perfectly counter-programmed #Moana” and @EvilDead Burn land on July 10 and #ChristoperNolan’s epic, selling out fast @odysseymovie debuts on July 17 and of course @SpiderMan: Brand New Day” swings into theaters on July 31. And by the way, the risk-taking summer “Punk Rock” month of August as I’ve always called it has some of the most anticipated hidden gems on the slate with Monica Barbaro in “One Night Only,” A24’s Anthony Bourdain biopic “Tony,” Ridley Scott’s “The Dog Stars” plus “Coyote vs. Acme” and “Cliffhanger.” All that being said, the summer of ’26 may indeed represent an inflection point and provide a newly drawn blueprint for the industry to follow for the most important moviegoing corridor on the calendar and I’m here for it!
